Dasmarines City Representative Elpidio Barzaga Jr. of the National Unity Party (NUP) has called on transport regulation agencies to require public utility bus operators to install security cameras inside their vehicles to help deter crime.
Barzaga, the vice president for external affairs of the NUP, said the cost of requiring bus operators to install closed-circuit television cameras (CCTVs) inside their buses is a cheap price to pay for securing the life and limb and properties of their passengers.
“Something should be done to stop criminals from preying on citizens who are already burdened by the difficulty of daily commute,” he said. “This would also help the police pin down criminals.”
The absence of CCTV cameras in PUBs and public places emboldens criminals and terrorists, he noted.
Barzaga said the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) should make the installation of video cameras a requirement for all public utility buses in the wake of several bus robberies that have taken place in the last few months.
He suggested putting up at least three security cameras inside PUBs—one in the passenger entrance, another one in front and one in the end row facing passengers.
