Macahambus Hill Cave and Gorge in Cagayan de Oro Created on November 5, 2012, 3:23 am Posted by nup

Cagayan de Oro is slowly becoming a popular adventure spot in Northern Mindanao with all its possibilities for outdoor activities.

From zorbing to ziplining to whitewater rafting; there’s certainly something you can do in the city to get your adrenaline pumping. Of course, another exhilarating thing to do in the city is to visit some of its most famous naturally formed sites.

Located in Cagayan de Oro City in Northern Mindanao, the Macahambus Hill is one of the many outdoor attractions offered by this beautiful city of the South for tourists seeking the ultimate traveling experience.
The 130 foot circular gorge surrounding the Macahambus Hill has been described by travelers as a ‘sight to behold’. Exquisite floral species bound this beautiful gorge which some are found only in Cagayan de Oro City.

But the main attraction of the Macahambus adventure is the famous Macahambus underground cave.

This natural wonder not only offers spelunkers an attractive view of its intricate ravine but also gives the adventurers a sense of Philippine history.

According to the marker placed at the entrance of the cave by the National Historical Institute of the Philippines (NHIP), this underground cave was once the site of the famous battle between the American forces vs. the Filipino resistance fighters during the Philippine-American War (1899-1902) known in history books as the ‘Battle of Macahambus Hill’ (June 4, 1900). Led by Col. Apolinario Velez, this was the first major victory of the Filipinos during the Philippine-American War and the last on Mindanao Island.
